EXOTIC CATS The Exotic Longhair and the Exotic Shorthair were first created by breeding Persians and domestic shorthaired cats. N.B The exotic shorthair, consisting of unions between Persians and shorthaired cats, was over a period of time shortened to simply 'Exotic'. Exotic The easy going nature of the Exotic allows it to fit into your home at any age. Exotic cats stay playful as adults and bring pleasure for many years. All things considered, the Exotic is a wonderful addition to any family. Adorable to look at, peaceful and clean, what more could you ask for the perfect pet. History Exotic cats are a combination of a Persian and American Shorthairs. This cat now very much resembles the Persian except in the coat length. Prior to 1967 when this breed was accepted for championship showing, the Domestic Shorthair was bred with the Persian Cat with the purpose of improving the coat. The result became more popular than the original Domestic Shorthair that carried the full pedigree. Description The Exotic is a medium to large sized cat with short, thick, strong legs. They have a thick, soft coat making them able to tolerate cool climates. The Exotic is easy to groom by giving regular combings with some extra attention given during shedding time so as to avoid hairballs. All colours are acceptable for the Exotic Shorthair. For showing purposes the eye color must be in conformance with the coat color. ![]() Characteristics and Temperament The Exotic combines the placid, affectionate nature of the Persian with the playful inquisitiveness of the American Shorthair; which makes an ideal family pet. The Exotic Cat is friendly and quite lovable. He is a quiet cat who is affectionate and makes a great companion. Gentle brushing will keep the coat in good condition. Exotic Longhair The prominent use of Persians in exotic shorthair breeding programs ensures the continued creation of exotics that carry a recessive gene for long hair. When one of these exotics is bred to another exotic carrying that same recessive gene, one fourth of the resulting kittens, on average, will have long hair. When an exotic with a recessive gene for long hair is bred to a Persian, half the kittens, on average, will have long hair. In the beginning these longhaired cats were unshowable. In time, however, more of the longhaired cats that were the byproducts of exotic shorthair breeding schemes became good enough to pass for Persians. Thus it was time to create another Amnesty International breed, the exotic longhair. Characteristics and Temperament The Exotic Longhair Cat is a very sweet, friendly cat. Known to be a "troublemaker" and rather childlike, the Exotic Longhair has been known to chew on anything that has aroused the cat's curiosity. However, in spite of all this, the Exotic Longhair is very loving, affectionate and makes a wonderful pet. The Exotic Longhair is known to get along well with children as well as other animals. Special Requirements While the Exotic Longhair does not suffer from many health problems as a breed, this cat does require a great deal of grooming. ![]()
